The practice of hypnosis as a therapeutic tool centers around accessing the subconscious to create lasting changes in one’s belief system. It can therefore be used to improve many areas of one’s life, from developing healthier habits, to curing phobias, to increasing confidence.  With a self hypnosis audio program, this usually means daily sessions for a month or more. Repeated affirmation and reinforcement to get our subconscious mind to accept new information as fact!

A hypnotist can plant suggestions, but the subject’s subconscious must still accept them. For some issues that may be less deeply or firmly ingrained in one’s subconscious, such as a newly developed phobia of dogs after a recent dog bite, it’s possible that a few sessions with a qualified hypnotherapist may be enough to help to relieve one of the problem. To achieve good results, the hypnotherapist should be experienced and well-trained with some background in psychology or in dealing with the specific issue.

Unfortunately, there are a multitude of products being sold under the “hypnosis” label which are made by the untrained with no credentials in the field. The suggestions may seem soothing and appear to follow standard self hypnosis techniques, but have no foundation in clinical hypnotherapy or psychology and can be poorly phrased and misleading. Many are also of low recording quality, or include unusual sound effects to make them seem more “cutting edge”.

Because of these inferior recordings, many think all self hypnosis audio products are ineffective, and are sold only to make someone an easy dollar from the unsuspecting seeking help. But there are, in fact, many caring, ethical, highly-trained, certified hypnotherapists who also offer excellent, helpful and effective audio products.
