Hypnosis is a state of deep mental and physical relaxation, when the mind is relaxed and focused and open to receive suggestion. You are not asleep, you are awake and very aware, you can hear what is being said to you.

Hypnosis is an unspoken, unwritten contract between two people. The subject agrees to let the other person play hypnotist. The hypnotist’s function is just a facilitator who suggests scenes, ideas and behavior for the subject to follow. However, the subject are the one who decide to follow the suggestion. The subject is in effect saying to the hypnotist, I will do whatever you suggest as long as the suggestion is consistent with my needs or motives, and not harmful to me in any way, and for as long as seems appropriate given the context of our meeting and relationship.

If you’re having a clash of ideas with a fellow team member over which best course of action to take, try to ask him, “What’s your main intention for choosing that alternative?” or, “What are you hoping to achieve with that course of action?” Then, listen sincerely. If you listen enough, you’ll find out the underlying reason behind their proposed action.

Each time you come across a person who acts in a way which is not in line with your personal beliefs and values, just try to look at his or her positive intentions. Once you understand their intentions, you will be able to suggest a better idea that’s in line with his intention and never have to argue anymore.
